“Think Hedgehog” – British Hedgehog Preservation Society talk in Tideswell

TDEG were delighted to welcome Morag Boyd from the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) to present “Think Hedgehog” at its May open meeting.

The FSC was packed, with around eighty people from Tideswell and beyond. The TDEG hedgehog project is working with similar projects across the Peak District. We had friends from Bradwell, the Hope Valley, Buxton, Eyam and Hartington at this event, as well as many people from our local area – all very keen to hear about how to help our hedgehogs.

Morag’s fascinating talk included information about the lives of hedgehogs and why they are under threat. She explored many of the problems created by us, as well as the actions we can all take to help hedgehogs, particularly in our gardens and the green spaces in our towns and villages. The final part of her talk focused on some of the things larger landowners and farmers could do to support hedgehogs in more rural areas.

(Please note this slide show is the property of the PTES and BHPS, and must not be presented by any other organisation.)

There were many questions from the audience after Morag’s presentation, focusing on issues such as conflicts with dogs, the benefits of careful feeding of hedgehogs, and the need for wild spaces in our gardens.

We were also fortunate to have Annmarie from the High Peak Rescue Centre in the audience, who emphasised that if you see a hedgehog out and about in the daytime it is very likely to be sick and needs immediate help (contacts below).

Morag was warmly thanked for her brilliant presentation. We were also pleased to confirm that all donations received from the meeting would be split three ways between our two local rescue centres and the PTES/BHPS project for hedgehogs.
