We are lobbying the government for stricter regulations to reduce pollution and to ensure water companies improve water quality.
Flush only the 3 Ps (Pee, Poo, Paper)
Wet wipes (even so-called “flushable” ones), disposable nappies, and sanitary products, belong in the bin, not the toilet. They block pipes and cause local flooding.
Use a bathroom bin (small compostable bin liners or paper bags are helpful to keep in the bathroom) and then dispose of waste in your grey bin.
Bin fats, oils, and grease
Never pour fats or toxic liquids down the drain. Soak up leftover cooking fat with paper towels and bin it, or turn it into fatballs to feed the birds.
Return unused medicines to a pharmacy
Never flush medication down sinks or toilets—it directly pollutes Tideswell Brook and will harm aquatic life.
Use fewer household chemicals and choose eco-friendly ones where possible
You can join TDEG’s Buying for Good Club, if you would like to buy eco-friendly household products from a local supplier.
Protect wildlife and keep dogs out of waterways
Topical flea and worming chemicals wash off in water, killing invertebrates such as Mayfly and Caddis Fly larvae that fish and birds need to survive.
Dogs entering the water can inadvertently disturb rare wildlife like Water Voles.
Keep dogs on leads near water and consider switching to oral flea and worming treatments.
These are just some easy actions we can all take if we care about water quality in our local brook.
