TDEG – Responses from the Mayoral Candidates to our Election Questions

Our Election Priorities and Questions for Candidates

On 19 March, TDEG members got together to create a list of our election priorities and some specific questions for two forthcoming elections. You can read the summary of those discussions here.

We have two important elections in the next few months. On 2 May, we will be voting for a Mayor for the new East Midlands Combined Authority. At some point in the near future, we will also have a General Election. We wanted to be ready for both those elections.

After our meeting, we sent a copy of our election priorities and some specific questions to the six candidates standing for the Mayoral position for the East Midlands. We promised to share their responses with our members. The six candidates are listed below (alphabetically), alongside links to their own campaign websites, followed by their responses (if any) to our questions. We will keep adding their responses to this list until 2 May (so please do check again before you vote).

As well as our own election priorities and questions, we have joined a partnership of local environmental groups who have created a campaign to help people to hold Neighbourhood Nature Forums. The aim is to decide on local priorities in relation to biodiversity and effectively campaign for these ahead of the general election. These groups are Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, the British Mountaineering Council, Down to Earth, Rural Action Derbyshire, CPRE and the Woodland Trust. You can read more about their Neighbourhood Nature plans here. Through that partnership, TDEG was invited to attend a meeting with one of the candidates, Clare Ward, in Nottingham. Summaries of that meeting, and the views of another candidate, Frank Adlinton Stringer, have since been circulated by the DWT Advocacy Manager. You can read that summary here.

Green Hustings – 7pm-8.30pm, 17 April

We would also like to encourage all our members to attend a ‘Green Hustings’, to be held online on 17 April, 7pm-8.30pm.

This event has been organised by a wide range of environmental and climate groups across the region, coordinated by Friends of the Earth in association with Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Wildlife Trusts, Fuel Poverty Action and D2N2 Active Travel Alliance (Sustrans, Cycle UK, Living Streets, Ridewise). All six candidates will be attending the event, so it is another opportunity to put some of our questions to the candidates.

Further details including how to register are available here. We hope some of you will be able to join the meeting and please feel free to share the link far and wide.
